Why I started investing
And the reason why you probably want to be an "Entrepreneur-Led" Investor as well.
Truth is, most of the time we think it’s “cool” to be an investor.
I remember, as a kid, I looked up to my Uncle, who was a Lawyer and always say him as an investor.
I remember one time I visited him in London, England and saw him on his Blackberry looking at charts. It felt cool, even if, he seemed a little stressed.
My investment story started when I was 17
As you may know, I had a successful business as a teenager and by the time I was 17 I tried my hand at investing.
I failed, badly.
I didn’t put money in stocks, or bonds or anything of those “things”.
Instead, I put money into too many places, with not enough understanding or leverage and while I was really good at marketing and sales, I was terrible at financial management, operations, team and delivery.
Those bad habits crossed over into the “investments” I made.
It was what helped me end up $1,000,000 in debt by the time I was 21.
I wouldn’t return to investing until 2019
Simply put, I was scared after that experience and so I said, I’ll just invest 100% into “me”.
Truth is, that’ll work for a while, it did for me.
The problem with that strategy, on the flip side, is that you will be the only one that can make money for you.
Technically that isn’t an issue, however, if you’re always directly tied to be the one who has to spend your energy to make money, at some point, it’ll come crashing down.
As a mentor for Entrepreneurs, so many of them want the following:
“I want my business to be sustainable so if I go away it’ll keep growing”
It’s a great aspiration, however, the truth is, what I’ve found even more is that investing is the answer to what they really want.
Which is freedom to do what they want, on their own terms.
I operate in businesses that are high growth, generally over 100% YoY and in those businesses, at that level of growth, if you want to take a 2 month vacation, it’s not going to be that possible.
Thus, my reason for starting investing came to be.
A deeper level of freedom, that Entrepreneurship wouldn’t allow, easily.
In 2018-2019 I built a business based on attempting to create this level of freedom
I had a massive team, 8-figures in revenue and I played the “bigger” business game. However, the truth is, the stress of that business and growth, may of made it so I could work a few hours a week and take as many vacations as I wanted, but the stress?
That was intense— I never want to go back to that.
So, in 2019, I set out on a new mission, to become an investor and advisor in companies, more than being just an Entrepreneur.
I’ve spent that time, until now, figuring out my “method” of investing and while I’m no pro at investing (or even good), I wanted to document the experience of being an Entrepreneur-led Investor, to help you.
Why? Because, trying to find good information on investing is basically impossible.
Almost all of it is based on retirement-focused investing, massive leverage or doing what “everyone else” is doing.
Why? Because most people don’t have the advantages of being an Entrepreneur. Being someone who can create value with their knowledge and skills is truly something that is magical.
It’s progressed quickly
It was May of 2019, I was in Necker Island writing my future vision. It felt so far away, yet, now, just a few years later my net worth has increased almost 30x that of which it was back then.
At first it happens slow and then… it magically starts snowballing in ways you couldn’t imagine.
In 2020, for example, I invested $40,000 into a company and it turned into $1.7 million just 16 months later.
It’s these things that create exponential wealth.
It’s been a journey up to this point, however, my “wealth” has increased far more than when I was just an Entrepreneur trying to catch the next “big” month.
And thus, I want to share these lessons with you.
Because… the first moment, you get money, where you didn’t have to run the business, you didn’t have to do the launch, you didn’t have to manage the team, you didn’t have to work.
It’s that moment that changes your life.
I’m still a “baby”
And in truth, there are so many people far more experienced and thankfully, I’ve been able to have them on my advisory board.
I’m excited to share with you, the lessons and how to slowly and surely transition from being an “Entrepreneur” to being an “Investor”.
Not led by 8% “annual” returns, but by returns that truly allow you to get your cake and eat it too.
Enjoy your weekend,
- Scott
